  16. <p>DIED. Yigael Yadin, 67, Israel's premier archaeologist and the
  17. epitome of that nation's citizen-soldier-politician tradition,
  18. who twice set aside his passion for the past, first to become
  19. a hero of the 1948 war of independence and Israeli chief of
  20. staff from 1949 to '52, later to serve as Deputy Prime Minister
  21. under Menachem Begin from 1977 to '81; of a heart attack; in
  22. Hadera, Israel. As operations chief of Israel's illegal
  23. pre-independence army, Yadin used his knowledge of biblical
  24. history and ancient fortifications to help construct modern
  25. battle plans. Two decades later, after gaining acclaim for
  26. obtaining the Dead Sea Scrolls and other ancient manuscripts,
  27. he led the excavations at the fortress of Masada, where he
  28. proved that nearly 1,000 Jewish defenders committed suicide in
  29. A.D. 73 rather than surrender to the Romans.
